Lisa Ray was born in Toronto to an Indian father and a Polish mother and grew up in the suburb of Etobicoke.[3] She excelled academically, doing five years of high school in four, while attending three different high schools: Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, Richview Collegiate Institute and Silverthorn Collegiate Institute.[4]

She spoke Polish to her maternal grandmother and watched movies of Federico Fellini and Satyajit Ray with her cinephile dad.[3] Ray was spotted by an agent in a crowd during a family vacation in India when she was 16, when she began modeling.

[edit] Career
Lisa Ray came to public attention when she appeared in an advertisement for Bombay Dyeing wearing a high-cut black swimsuit, [5] opposite Karan Kapoor.[6] Subsequently, she returned to Canada to attend university to study journalism, but a car injury which injured her mother derailed those plans. Instead, she returned to India where she appeared on the cover of Glad Rags wearing a red Baywatch-style swimsuit. The sensation that caused led to more magazine covers, spokesperson deals and a job as host of her own show-business program. A Times of India poll named her the "ninth most beautiful woman of the millennium", the only model in the top ten.[4]

She made her cinematic debut in 1994 in the Tamil film Nethaji opposite actor Sarath Kumar where she appeared in a brief role. Later she acted in a Telugu film Takkari Donga opposite Mahesh Babu. After turning down a number of roles,[7] she made her Bollywood debut with the film Kasoor in 2001 opposite Aftab Shivdasani[6] where her voice was subsequently dubbed by Divya Dutta as she could not speak Hindi.[8] Her work in that film caught the eye of Deepa Mehta who cast Ray in the romantic Indian-Canadian romp, Bollywood/Hollywood in 2002.[3] In 2005, she worked again with Mehta in the Oscar-nominated film, Water where she did speak her own lines in Hindi although her voice was dubbed in the final cut of the film.[8] Since then she has worked in productions from Canada, Europe and the United states.

Recent roles include a farm girl in All Hat, a school teacher in A Stone's Throw a housewife in 50's apartheid South Africa in The World Unseen and a Christian-Arab lesbian in the humorously entitled "I Can't Think Straight" directed by Shamim Sarif.

In 2007, she completed filming for Kill Kill Faster Faster, which is a contemporary film noir inspired by the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Joel Rose. She appeared nude in the movie and in a few uninhibited sex scenes, something which no mainstream actress of Indian origin had done before.[9]

She guest starred in USA Network series Psych, which was directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, which aired on 30 November 2009.

She appeared in the famous song "Afreen Afreen" by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1996.

Lisa Ray has been featured in the Canadian edition of Hello magazine as one of the '50 Most Beautiful People' of the country.

Ray has also appeared in a guest role of a reporter, Dominique Ball , in the recent Woody Harrelson movie Defendor.

Ray will next be seen in UniGlobe Entertainment's cancer docu-drama titled 1 a Minute scheduled for release in 2010.[10] The documentary is being made by Namrata Singh Gujral and will also feature cancer survivors Olivia Newton-John, Diahann Carroll, Melissa Etheridge, Mumtaz (actress) and Jaclyn Smith as well as William Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin and Priya Dutt, whose lives have been touched by cancer. The feature is narrated by Kelly McGillis. The film will also star Barbara Mori, Deepak Chopra and Morgan Brittany.

Lisa Ray lives with her longtime partner, fashion photographer Paolo Zambaldi.[11] She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on 23 June 2009, a cancer of the white blood cells known as plasma cells, which produce antibodies. Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan (born 28 January 1986) (Tamil:ஷ்ருதி ஹாசன்) is an Indian singer turned actress. Her parents are the noted actors, Kamal Haasan and Sarika.
Career
Early career
Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika on 28 January 1986 in Chennai, India.[2] She also has a younger sister named Akshara, who represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing.[3] Haasan studied at Abacus in Chennai, until 10th grade, when she moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St Andrew’s College.

However, Haasan shifted her focus to cinema and music, and eventually travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai

Singing
Shruti Haasan sang her first song aged just six in her father's Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. Later while pursuing her studies in school, Haasan made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, singing a duet performing for the voice of a child, with her father Kamal Haasan, who also directed the film.[6] Shruti Haasan's second song came in Hey Ram, where she sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil. The album from Ilayaraaja, which was critically praised, won Haasan accolades for her efforts with reviewers, Screen India praising that she "has the makings of a good singer, and with some training she should go great guns".[7]

Shruti Haasan had the opportunity to sing with veteran singer K J Yesudas for the movie 'En Mana Vaanil' under Ilaiyaraaja's music. The song was 'Roattorap paattuch chaththam'. The movie was released in 2002. She has sung in a Tamil film, for Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram under the composition of Harris Jayaraj. As of November 2008, Haasan is also midway through her untitled debut album, which she has composed, written and sung, and is set for release in mid-2009.[8] A further song was recorded under her voice for her Hindi film, Luck.

Acting
After pursuing a career in singing, Shruti Haasan, also entered into modelling. She started by starring appearing in the Frappe! magazine version of September 2007, since then she has gone on to appear in Verve.

In 2000, Haasan made her cinematic debut in the Tamil and Hindi bilingual film, Hey Ram, directed by her father. She made a cameo appearance as the daughter of Vallabhai Patel in the biopic of Mahatma Gandhi.

After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu's Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her full debut as a heroine in 2008 with a movie opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamath.[9] Despite Madhavan admitting that the news "was premature",[10] she signed up to the film, which was titled, Endrendrum Punnagai,[11] only to be stalled prior to production.[12] Eventually Haasan signed up to Soham Shah's Luck opposite Imran Khan, a Bollywood film. However, despite the film gathering much publicity prior to release, it became a critical and commercial flop.[13]

Music composing

After much speculation, Shruti Haasan is the music composer of the Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan which released in 2009, with lead role played by her father Kamal Haasan who is also co-producer of the movie under Rajkamal International.[14] The bilingual, is a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!, but the soundtracks of both the projects are entirely separate. Apart from this, Shruthi Hassan is also the vocalist of an alternative rock band The Extramentals.
