Illegal possession of arms
Due to terrorist interactions, and supposed weapons possession, on 19 April 1993, Sanjay was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act(TADA).He spent 16 months in jail as an undertrial until he was granted bail in October 1995 by the Supreme Court of India.
In November 1993, a 90,000-page long primary chargesheet was filed against the 189 accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case including Sanjay.
In March 2006, when framing muthar charges against extradited Abu Salem and co-accused Riyaz Siddiqui in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, the prosecution said that Salem delivered 9 AK-56 rifles and some hand grenades to actor Sanjay Dutt at his Bandra house in the second week of January 1993.
On 13 February 2007, the special branch of Mumbai police arrested Abdul Qayyum Abdul Karim Shaikh, a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim and wanted by Mumbai Police Special Task Force for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts from Mumbai.Qayuum had been named by Sanjay Dutt in his confessional statement. Sanjay had said that he met Qayuum in Dubai in September 1992 and bought a pistol from him. According to CBI, the pistol was sold to Sanjay at the instance of Dawood's brother Anees Ibrahim.
On 31 July 2007, Dutt was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment for illegally possessing weapons. At the same time, Dutt was also "cleared of terrorism conspiracy charges in the blasts" related to the 1993 bombings.According to The Guardian, "The actor claimed he feared for his life after the notorious "Black Friday" bombings, which were allegedly staged by Mumbai's Muslim-dominated mafia in retaliation for deadly Hindu-Muslim clashes a few months earlier. But the judge, Pramod Kode, rejected this defence and also refused bail."Dutt was immediately taken into custody and sent to Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. As the sentence was pronounced, Dutt was "visibly shocked and was seen shivering and holding back tears".
On 2 August 2007, Sanjay Dutt was moved from Arthur Road jail in Mumbai to the Yeravada Jail in Pune.On 7 August 2007, Dutt appealed the sentence. Later, on 20 August 2007, the Supreme Court of India granted Dutt interim bail. He was released after Yeravada Jail authorities received a copy of the court's bail order. The bail was valid until the time the special TADA court, which sentenced Dutt on 31 July, provides a copy of its judgment to him.Dutt was released from jail on 23 August. On 22 October 2007 Dutt was back in jail but again applied for bail. On 27 November 2007, Dutt was granted bail by the Supreme Court. He currently has an appeal for an acquittal pending. In January 2009, Dutt announced that he would contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on the Samajwadi Party ticket. However, he withdrew his candidacy in March 2009 after the Supreme Court refused to suspend his conviction.Alleged involvement
In the 1993 Mumbai bombings & the courts verdict . Sanjay Dutt was arrested on April 19, 1993 for alleged involvement in the March 12, 1993 bombings of Mumbai. Mumbai was engulfed in riots as the aftermath of the destruction of the Babri Masjid complex in Ayodhya in December 1992. The resulting riots claimed hundreds of lives and it is during this time that Sanjay Dutt claims to have asked his under world friends to provide him with a fire arm for protection. He however had not conveyed to police any threats to his life. As per the CBI case filed in a TADA court Abu Salem and his men went to Dutt's house on January 16, 1993 and gave him three AK-56 rifles, 25 hand grenades, one 9 mm pistol and cartridges. He returned two AK-56 rifles, hand grenades and cartridges to Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora but kept one AK-56 rifle with himself. It is alleged that after the blasts, Sanjay, who was shooting in Mauritius on learning that Mumbai Police is investigating his involvement in the blasts instructed his friends to destroy the rifle . On Dutt's instructions, the rifle was destroyed by Yusuf Nullawalla, Kersi Adjenia, Rusi Mulla and Ajay Marwah. The rifle and cartridges formed part of the consignment, which was smuggled into India at Dighi Port on January 9, 1993, in pursuance to the conspiracy as the CBI alleged. Dutt denies the charges that he was involved with the larger conspiracy to blow up Mumbai, but acknowledges that he personally knew the other accused. On learning that Mumbai police was looking to question Sanjay Dutt, his father, Mr. Sunil Dutt asked him to immediately return from Mauritius. Sanjay however instructed his friends to destroy the rifle and then called the then Mumbai Police Commissioner of Police and informed him of his plans to return to India immediately, where he was arrested upon landing. After arrest in 1993 Sanjay Dutt spent 18 months in the jail and was released on bail. During this time, Sanjay Dutt got tremendous support from arguably the entire Indian Film Industry, but more surprisingly in the face of the serious allegation his fans and the people of Mumbai supported him through the ordeal, in spite of a negative portrayal of the star in all forms of media. The vast majority of Indians considered the charges ludicrous, though their reasons varied, as is evident in Shatrughan Sinha's sarcastic reaction: "Don't be ridiculous! He doesn't even know what a stock exchange is.On November 21, 2005 Abu Salem reportedly confirmed the involvement of Sanjay Dutt.On November 28, 2006, A special TADA court held actor Sanjay Dutt guilty under the Arms Act for possessing weapons, but acquitted him of terrorism, and conspiracy charges."During my reasoning I have not found him (Sanjay) to be a terrorist," Judge P D Kode said in the open court. Sanjay Dutt has been given bail till December 19 when he has to surrender before the court. His jail sentence will be known after that,he can appeal to higher courts. As nearly 90 people are convicted the Judge P Kode did not pronounce the sentence at once.Sanjay Dutt's bail has been extended till 18 January and the actor is willing to visit his daughter Trishal during the Christmas vacation and take decision regarding his father's estate after his death. However on 18Th January 2007 Sanjay Dutt faced another shock. One ====Abhimanyu Altekar (35)==== Filed an Intervener’s Application against Sanjay Dutt and further stated that He deserves no mercy. As per Abhimanyu’s application Sanjay Dutt was 33+ and enough mature when he brought illegal weapons and also knowing difference between legal and illegal weapons as he was already having legal weapon(s). So his act can not be considered as a “Mistake made due to lack of knowledge”. Sanjay Dutt should not get benefit of bond for his family, as he was on bail for 12+ years and given a chance to earn and make provisions for his family if he gets jail sentence for his offence. His career remained intact, successful, smooth in spite of his role of an accused in Bomb-Blast case. He has minted a lot of money due to his lucrative profession. So he has used his chance of bail (i.e. mercy to make provisions for his family in advance.) The application filed by Abhimanyu Altekar was logical and right on merit but it was opposed by prosecution and advocate of Sanjay Dutt due to legal issue of Locus Standi. However later Abhimanyu claimed that he has Locus Standi because he is an aggrieved person due to act of all of the accused in the matter of Sanjay Dutt and respondent who is State Govt. of Maharashtra. There was strong reaction among people due to suspicious stand of prosecution and State Govt. of Maharashtra. Though the intervener application filed by Abhimanyu was rejected by court, it was strong enough and sufficient to the ignite issue of Suspicious Stand of prosecution and State Govt. of Maharashtra. Just after few days of this application relatives of convicted people from 1993’s Bomb- blast case protested against , Sanjay Dutt, court and also against Suspicious Stand of prosecution and State Govt. of Maharashtra. Therefore Abhimanyu became ‘Virtual Intervener’ in the matter of Sanjay DuttAbhimanyu’s application indirectly raised doubt against of prosecution and State Govt. of Maharashtra and faith about Indian Judiciary. On the other hand Abhimanyu was also an accused in another bomb-blast case and got ‘Clear Acquittal’ In the same incident there was no any casualty due to said Bomb-blast. it is much older case of 20–21 December 1990 than sanjay’s matter , And ended after 16 years. Abhimanyu stated that he was falsely implicated as he was eye-witness of the same crime for which he was arrested. But to save real culprits and to make show of prosecution and investigation he was arrested and prosecuted. He also says that he has sufficient evidence against real culprits who planted a bomb in his case, but State Govt. of Maharashtra didn’t take it. It is also noticed that Abhimanyu was implicated in several criminal cases (about 12) and so far he is not convicted in a single case ! and still facing 3 more criminal cases . But his life was ruined due to many cases, he was physically and brutally tortured . His stories were published in news papers like Freedom Fighter. But could not save him from loss of 16 years, defamation and physical torture. There is no provision for justified compensation in India if someone proves that he was falsely implicated and prosecuted in a criminal case. The Indian law can give max. compensation of 100 Indian Rs.( Just 2.08$ ) to such victim from concerned investigation officer. Sanjay’s bail is extended till 20Th February 2007. Other controversies In 2001 he was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate about alleged hawala deals in connection with the probe into the underworld-Bollywood nexus. No charges were filed against the actor. Trasnscripts/Tapes proving underworld connections On the night of November 11, Sanjay Dutt spoke on the telephone for 45 minutes to the underworld don Chhota Shakeel in Karachi. The audio tapes show Sanjay try to please shakeel with a gift and talk about several Bollywood/Underworld figures. In 2002, it was reported that he beat up a rickshaw driver after an altercation. Apparently the latter rammed his rickshaw into the actor's car, while trying to overtake at night.[citation needed] Sanjay Dutt's bail has been extended till 18 January and the actor is willing to visit his daughter Trishal during the X'mas vacation and take decision regarding his father's estate after his death.(Verified Source: BBC online)

Quotes
(About Munnabhai M.B.B.S.) "It's a kind of satire on the medical profession, but at the same time, it's a fun film, though not a slapstick comedy. The jokes and dialogs aren't written to evoke a forced laughter; I'd say it's situational. Munnabhai is comical because of the way he is. But at the core, it's a very emotional film. It will be a really fantastic film. The script is amazingly hilarious. It's not an inspired story, it's original. Munnabhai was one role I couldn't refuse, as it's in a league of its own. Suddenly, due to one jhatka in his life, he decides to become a doctor. So how a bhai enrolls in a medical college and goes to study medicine is very funny as an idea."
